There is a page-by-page cascade of dreadful extended metaphors and distractingly inappropriate similes (.) All is not lost, however. Baldly put, Pessl has a tin ear for prose. "The initially droll bibliographical referencing, there to show Blue's pedantic nature and her father's influence, quickly becomes wearisome, but it is the style that is the novel's biggest failing.(.)
